Created in the 12th century from the sea’s retreat and taming of the Aa river, Graveline owes its importance to the role it was given against France.
Captured definitively by the French in 1658, its defences were turned and reinforced against its former masters of the Spanish Netherlands.
Although deslisted in 1902, the town did not have the means to raze its fortification at that time.
