Avesnes was created around 1080, built on an escarpment overlooking the Helpe River; it would remain at the crossroads of the Netherlands, Bourgogne and France for 1,000 years.

Visit the fortified city of Avesnes sur Helpe and discover the remains of the creations of the architect Vauban, the last 18th century builder of fortifications.

Located at the heart of the L’Avesnois Regional Natural Park, the town’s special charm attracts tourists, painters and historians alike.

It was founded by Wédric the Bearded in the 11th century. In the 16th century, Jessé de Forest and his companions set off from Avesnes to found New York.

In 1918, Kaiser Wilhelm II and Marshal Hindenburg organised the final German offensive here.
