At the beginning of the 14th century, Saint-Omer was one of the largest and wealthiest towns in Europe.
Constructed from the 9th century, the different enclosures progressively linked Saint-Bertin Abbey, whose remains can be seen today, with the collegiate church that has since become one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals north of Paris.
Rebuilt during the spanish period, the fortifications were reinforced by Vauban.
