    Captured and ransacked 16 times from the 9th to 20th century, Maubeuge lived a final tragic destiny in 1940, the year in which 90% of the town was razed by hand-lit fires. The five bastions on the left bank of the Sambre River still remain from the 56-hectare fort built by Vauban.
