Ambleteuse is a small port in the slack estuary that was occupied by the English in the middle of the 16th century.
Henry VIII had the village surrounded by ramparts with five bastions, in line with the new technique of sunken fortifications. The very large structures on the south front are still visible.
At the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV wanted to create a naval port and Vauban built a fort to protect the worksite. Soon after this, sand invasion meant work had to be abandoned. (...)
